Holes, holes, holes! Bring a new dimension to your FME with a variety of holes. Leave them open to look through. Fill them with something – perhaps something precious. Bring something out through them. Hide them. Draw attention to them. The possibilities are endless.
In this technique-based class, explore the construction, edge-finishing, decoration and combination of a number of stitched holes suitable for use in machine embroidery, together with open work, reverse appliqué (including false shisha) and design considerations associated with the use of holes.

This is both a project and technique class where you will work with transfer dyes (used for colouring synthetic materials) and with developing a small series of work.
Transfer printing is a method of getting permanent colour onto synthetic materials such as Lutradur (a polyester non-woven fibre), polyester and polyester organza. Also explore methods of melting back and free hand stitching to embellish your printed fabric. Using various leaves from your local area and textile paint we will experiment and print onto our base fabric creating individual cloth. Play with painting dyes onto paper, no fancy designs or patterns, just simple painted colour combinations with some fun resists. Then use heat (and pressure) to transfer the paintings onto suitable white and commercially coloured polyester fabrics. Combine this with shaping and manipulating the fabric by hand or with stitching (pleats, ruffles, etc) to create fabulous painted and dyed 3D fabric. Fabrics created using these techniques are suitable for use as accessories, for interior decor or for inclusion in art projects. Use all those exotic leftover scraps along with lengths of thread, fancy wool, beads, feathers, petals and leaves etc, to explore the endless possibilities of creating many fabulous types and thickness of machine made cords. You will never need to use a commercial cord or braid again. Create your own unique flowers, leaves, dangly beaded tassels and much, much more.
