From Wendy: “Felt making is my passion. For me it is creative, vibrant, fun, and challenging. At present I am using a lot of recycled materials in my felt work - concentrating on wearable art, wall art and homewares. I am learning new skills all the time and re-working old techniques.”

Dijanne Cevaal

Dijanne describes her quilts as a product of a lifelong engagement with textiles, the mobility of the stitch, the interaction of colour by dyeing and printing, and the creation of stories.

She has won prizes at a number of events, including the Husqvarna Viking prize at Carrefour Europeen du Patchwork in France in 2007.  In the past seven years Dijanne has been curating exhibitions that have travelled mostly in Europe and the Middle East, and has taught widely especially in Europe. Sue Dennis

Sue is an award-winning textile artist recognised internationally for her distinctive, colourful, original art quilts that incorporate innovative surface 

design techniques and stitch, to create texture and tell a uniquely Australian story. Sue has exhibited widely throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, Great Britain, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East and has been published in many magazines.

Sharyn Hall

Sharyn is a professional teacher and as a textile artist uses stitching, dyeing and mixed media to create artworks which currently reference landscape and culture. Sharyn works from her studio in Brookfield in between travelling nationally and internationally to teach, study and exhibit. Her work combines dyeing (resists and discharge), printing (transferred photo images, block and screen printing) and stitching.

 

 

 

 

Vicky McKeown, presenter for the Australian College of Computer Embroidery and Textile Technologies, QLD

Bryan and Myra Doyle founded digitise-wiseTM to provide a genuine learning experience for those wishing to develop digitising skills. They have gone on to develop a full qualification (Certificate III) in ‘Digitising and Computerised Hoop Embroidery' which is Australia's only nationally recognised training for this subject. At the Textile Arts Festival the College will present one day classes conducted by Head of Faculty, Vicki McKeown.

 

 

Jude Skeers, NSW

Jude Skeers is a self taught textile artist who works exclusively with hand knitting. He has had several major exhibitions of his knitted webs, trees and other sculptures over a 20 year period in galleries all over Australia. Jude has specialised in circular knitting. In the 1990s he designed and wrote the patterns for a range of hats. These were published in Yarn Art and his hats sold widely in Australia and the USA. Recently he has developed a range of wearable pieces using his specially designed circular needles known as the 'Broome Beanie Needle' and garments using techniques of Möbius knitting. www.black.com.au

 

 

 

Ken Smith, Tasmania

Ken is well known for his original machine embroidery and wearable artworks. He has a teaching background and an interest in theatre

costume. Over the years, Ken has developed a number of original techniques. Free motion machine embroidery satisfies his desire for originality and contributes heavily to his trademark work which is characterised by rich colour, texture and complex pattern. www.bennett-smith.com

 

 

 

Louise Snook, WA

A self employed artist and teacher specialising in felt, fashion, sculpture, dyeing, puppets, costume and screen printing, Louise has an extensive

professional textile background. Her adventures with textiles have included travelling to Mongolia to research the making of felt yurts, studio assistant for an artist in Switzerland, stylist for Jo Sharp knitting books and exhibiting in WA's Art to Wear, Wear with Flair, Stitched, Zippered, Gathered and fibre dye technician for TreeTop Colour Harmonies. Louise is President of the Western Australian Fibre Textile Association and sits on the Government Dept of Arts and Culture, Designer, Fashion Panel.

 

 

 

Yanny Split, New Zealand

Yanny was born in Holland and made an early mark on the wearable art scene by organising the first fashion show to be held in an art gallery. Yanny 

emigrated to New Zealand in 1987 and has come to be associated with zany, vibrant and often experimental clothing, ranging from knitwear to hand-painted silk ensembles, and especially the art of shibori, to wacky avant-garde numbers.  Yanny has held the position of Chairperson of the New Zealand Combined Textiles Guild, is now chairperson of Creative Communities Waikato, and Foundation Trustee of the Arts Waikato Trust. She describes her pieces as being arty, crafty and colourful clothing design, and ‘most of all, making my creative clothing makes me happy'.

 

 

 

Kirry Toose, NSW

A background in the ‘rag-trade' and traditional design skills including life drawing, pattern making and grading, silk screen printing, garment 

construction and fashion rendering have created a very strong foundation in Kirry's current textile artwork. Kirry has worked for the Elizabethan Theatre Trust, a short stint with the Sydney Opera, and with some great designers. She has tutored for International Fibre Forums, USQ McGregor Winter & Summer School, Flying Arts Program QLD, Kuringai Arts Centre, TAFE, various universities and schools as well as textile groups. Exhibitions include Australian Image Gallery, Art to Wear Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, London, Alexandra Palace; Pittsburgh, USA, Fibre Arts; WOW Awards New Zealand.

Kirry has judged Fashion in the Fields; is currently on the judging panel for Genes for Jeans, Do it with Denim; she is actively involved with numerous textile associations: past president of Australian Textile Arts & Surface Design Association, convenor (9 years) of Art to Wear.

 

 

 

Cecile Whatman, ACT

Cecile has been working with textiles, fabric and paint for over twenty years.  She has taught patchwork, fabric dyeing and painting, and mixed media techniques extensively across Australia. Her philosophy towards classes and projects is that classes should be fun, achievable and a little bit different. All of her classes follow a formula of simple techniques which result in high impact projects. Carol Wilkes, QLD

Carol is an experienced, multi-skilled textile artist and tutor who refers to herself as a "Surface Embellishment Technician", an experimentalist in both embroidery

and contemporary quilt and fashion design practices. Her creative artistry, free motion embroidery and collage techniques have developed as a result of her passion for fabric and fashion. Carol has worked as a judge, lecturer and critic at various forums, textile and fashion awards and her work is represented in collections worldwide, including Japan, New Zealand, England and USA.
