Lutradur Sampler
with Lesley Riley for Unique Stitching
Time: 9.30am to 12.30pm
Fee: $57
Explore the many uses of this inexpensive and versatile new material for artists.
What is Lutradur? Simply put, it's the magic in the middle – a versatile cross between fabric and paper. It has the body of paper and the strength of fabric. The open, airy structure of Lutradur absorbs paint, ink, image transfers and more, to create a surface that filters light, yet has body and retains its shape. Lutradur is also thermoplastic, which means it changes when heated, producing the kind of organic and artistic effects fibre and mixed-media artists love.
It is an excellent surface to stitch, stamp, stencil, distress, embellish and more.
In this class, based on her book, Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur, Lesley will show you 27 techniques. You will get a chance for hands-on exploration of many of these techniques as well. Lutradur can be used in your mixed media, bookmaking, scrapbooking, quilting and more.
Class includes a kit containing painted Lutradur, pre-printed TAP images to transfer and ribbon provided by Lesley. Heat guns, glues, and other tools will be available for use in class.
Students bring: Scissors, a couple of your favourite rubber stamps (patterned stamps are good), decorative papers and fabric (a handful).
Optional: Ephemera for creating collages, hand sewing needle and 1 or 2 decorative threads

SHEER FANTASY: Stitch - Shape, Strip & Colour Silk Organza
with Sharyn Hall
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Fee: $100
Silk organza has several unique properties: it's sheer, it takes dye well, but did you know that it contains sericin - the stuff that makes it stiff. When the sericin is removed, a soft subtle silk fabric is produced. When combined with dyeing and manipulation… the fantasy begins.
In Sheer Fantasy: Stitch – Shape: Strip & Colour students will stitch, pleat and gather or use folding and wrapping (pole) techniques to manipulate the fabric into 3 dimensional shapes. Heat and chemicals will be applied to strip the colour and sericin. Beautiful dimensional shape is created by using the heat and chemicals in combination with the resist. Additional colour will be added with acid dyes. The textured surfaces created could also be ironed to show the sheer yet subtle pattern created. The options are endless, the end result is fabric to fantasise about.
Fee covers all dyes and chemicals used, use of all equipment, and class notes, plus kit of fabrics.
Students bring: Sewing accessories: needles, polyester thread, dressmakers' and safety pins, large and small fabric scissors.
Bring suitable resists (if you have them) for hot water dyeing (wooden boards, small clamps, wooden pegs, cords & string, glass beads, stones, no poles).
Good quality rubber gloves (not disposables), apron, old towel, Chux wipes, 9-10 litre plastic bucket, 2 plastic ice cream containers, 15 small-medium zip-lock bags, plastic grocery bags, medium black permanent marker, masking tape, notebook and pen, pencil.
Wear suitable shoes in case the floor gets wet.
Fee includes: 10 assorted silk organza fabrics (white, coloured or pre-dyed), cut as 8 pieces approx 35cm square plus two strips 20cm x 115cm.
